Super cute! Thank you for sharing ! :)
No listing of Materials.... What type of yarn did you use and how much?????
I just adjusted the top of the pattern - Yarn - ww (#4) - I used vanna's choice maroon & white (same yarn for both the hat and snowflake) I used about 1/2 the skein because of the braids
Thank you for sharing! This is going to make the perfect gift for a girl I know this weekend! You saved the day with this one! :)
Love love love! :)
Beautiful hat! I LOVE the snowflake!! I will be making this for sure! Thanks for sharing your talent! :]
I'm sorry, but there's some instructions missing in the snowflake "pattern." How do I go from:"in each loop - 2sc, ch3, 2sc"to"in each ch3 - 1sc, ch3, 1sc, ch5, 1sc, ch3, 1sc - then ch3 to start next set?"If I go straight into a SC in the ch3 space, it bunches it up.
I am having the same problem. I wonder if we should slip stitch to each chain 3?
I had no problems... after I did each grouping of the "2sc, ch3, 2sc" I just slip-stitched into the 1st stitch of that round, then started with the "1sc, ch3..." of the next round.
Thanks for sharing! I am making these to be given to sick children at West Virginia University Medical Center childrens hospital this winter. Hope to make a smaller version without the flaps for new borns and preemies in the NICU too. Thanks to you and Pinterest for bringing me to your pattern!
Love this! Thank you so much for sharing!
I love this hat pattern. So cute and simple. Here's the project I made for my daughter...http://pinterest.com/pin/57632070203014267/ Thanks!
Would you make one of those and sell it to me? I am not handy with a needle! I would want an adult size.
Yes I can :) You can purchase/order here - https://www.etsy.com/listing/116729351/snowflake-hat-adult
How do you do the striped braid, I can braid but not sure how to get the perfect stripes.
It's a 4-strand braid - kind of like this - http://www.rudedogleather.com/free_leathercraft_classes/4_cord_braid.html except instead of keeping the 2 colors to one side I cross the same color over each other so it makes a fishtail braid effect
Thank you so much, lovin this hat. I actually used just the hat without the snowflake and put mohawks on it for the boys.
I just finished making this hat. Unfortunately, I found a few flaws in the pattern versus your picture. When you first change colors you have 5 rows of white hdc and your picture only shows 2. I changed the pattern that I did 3 row in red before changing colors to white and hdc 2 rows. Thank you for this wonderful pattern! I just adore it! I put pom pom's at the end of the braids. It turned out adorable! Here is a post of how mine turned out. http://jonandhollidiy.blogspot.com/2013/01/snowflake-hat.html
Thanks so much for catching that! I've made the changes in the pattern so it should be correct now.
Where can I get the pattern in an adult size??
To make an adult size you would do an increase row in R7 ch 2, 2HDC in next *HDC 7, 2 hdc, 2 HDC in next hdc* around, HDC last 3 (68 HDC) - then do another 4 rounds of the main color before switching.
I'm pretty new to making hats, so I'm a little confused. I don't understand how to make the circle (rnd 1). How many do I chain to be able to sc 10 to make the circle?
I actually use a magic circle to start all of my hats - here is a great video on how to do the magic circle - http://youtu.be/WLuSVyKvoUg
Wow! I'm sure I sound like a nerd, but that's awesome! I just recently found a YouTube video from the Crochet Geek. She is great! I've been crocheting for years but I am self taught. These other techniques are wonderful! Thank you so much Melinda!
By the way, this pattern is super cute! Thank you for sharing it!
Do you have the pattern for the Rock Chalk blanket. I have 2 grandsons I would like to make it for them. Thank You! Sandra
How do you make the magic circle?
I like this tutorial http://youtu.be/WLuSVyKvoUg and this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3PmaQJbyVt0 on the magic circle :)
When working rounds 7-10 are you supposed to chain 2 first?
yes you would :)
Thanks! I love this pattern. Its exactly what I have been looking for, for my daughter.
This is adorable! Thank you for sharing, i"m making it for my daughter for christmas!!!!
Is the size of the pattern for an infant say 8-12 months old? I would like to make for my great granddaughter but unsure of the sizing! Thank you!An adorable hat!
This would prob. be a little big an 8-12m old would prob. have a head circumference of 17-18 inches - this should work for making the hat smaller - R5: ch 2, HDC into same hdc *3 HDC in next 3 hdc, 2 HDC in next hdc* around (50HDC) - you will finish with the 3HDC in in next 3 HDCR6-9: ch 2, HDC around (50HDC)*Change Color* R10-11: ch 2, HDC around (in B) (50HDC)*Change Color*R12: ch 2, HDC around (in A) (50HDC)*Change Color*R13: ch 2, HDC around (in B) (50HDC)*change color*R14: ch 2, HDC around (in A) (50HDC)Then add the earflaps
is round 4 misprinted? it says ch2 HDC in same hdc *2HDC in next 2 HDC, 2 HDC in next hdc* around..finish with 2HDC in next 2 hdc. if I read it like this it is 2HDC in every HDC...not sure but makes it more than 40HDCthank you
that's right - 2HDC in the next 2 HDC stitches from the previous round, then 2HDC in the next HDC stitch - so you have an increase, 2 stitches, increase, 2 stitches all the way around so it's a total of 40 in that round.
I am having the same difficulty on R4. I am kinda new at crochet, but I am thinking the the instructions as saying that there should be 2 HDCs in each of the 30 stitches, making 60 HDCs total. Sorry to be such a moron, but are we skipping stitches or are we doing something in every stitch? I LOVE this pattern and I REALLY want to do it justice! Any help would be appreciated from one of the advanced crochet goddesses out there!
I've been working with a few friends to update this entire pattern and add a couple other sizes and while the pdf to download the pattern isn't ready yet the child sized pattern that was originally posted has been re-formatted and errors have been fixed. Row 4 should be all better now, it was written funny
When you change color, you show to HDC around (in B) and next row (in A). Sorry to be so dumb, but what are A and B?
A and B are the 2 colors you choose, for the one pictured I used Maroon and White
I downloaded the pattern with the alternate size options. Would you happen to have size option pattern for a newborn ? My sister is due to deliver her baby girl any day now who is probably going to be well-sized like her brother (who was 8lbs 11oz and 21" at birth). I don't remember what his head circumference was at birth. They live in northern California in a microclimate area. Thanks for any help you can give me :)
I didn't have a newborn size tested since they outgrow that size so quickly, but Oodles4Noodles patterns specialize in newborn sizes and I use her patterns for new born hats - http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/sources/oodles-4-noodles
Thank you for sharing this adorable pattern and for having it available in PDF.
Hi,Could you explain the following as I'm not able to understand "Row 3: join with sl st to first sc, sl st in the first 2 sc of the row, ch 1" after "R3: in each loop: 2sc, ch3, 2sc'.Thanks.
I just read over the pattern and I'm not seeing where you see the Row 3? The R3 you copied/pasted is from the snowflake but doesn't go with the other pattern line you have there I'm not sure where that is from
Yes, I'm reflecting to the snowflake crochet which I do not understand that particular step that I paste in the earlier message.Could you guide me on that portion as I'm stuck after crocheting "2sc, ch3, 2sc" in Row 3?Thanks.
In R2 you are making a series of loops then in R3 you are putting (2sc, ch 3, 2sc) in each loop all the way around and then to close off the row you are joining to the first sc of the round with an sc and slip stitching over to get to the ch 3 loop to start R4 - does that make more sense?
Hi Melinda, now it make sense to me.... ok.... I try again & see if I can fit up a snowflake. Thanks for the guidance.
Made this in a flash! I love it!!! Thanks for posting such a cute hat!! Judy
Do you join in chain 2?
why can I not find the pattern in crochet?
Hi Melinda,You stated in the blog you have an updated version of your pattern. Can you point me in the direction so that I can find your revised copy. I would love to be able to make this for my granddaughter before the weekend and cold weather get here. Thank you for sharing! It's a lovely beanie or hat.
